2009 NFC EAST DIVISION

By: Jorge Gonzalez     Date: Sep 11, 2009
Print Article

The NFC East was one of the best division in football in 2008 and looks to be a force again 2009. The Eagles have the most weapons offensively with the addition of Michael Vick. The Giants are the favorites to win the division after getting several key players back from injury. The Cowboys will be looking forward to life after T.O. and will a bit under the radar for a change. The Redskins will have one of the best defenses in the but need their offense to step up.

Don’t make the mistake of counting the Redskins out from the NFC East. Redskins QB Jason Campbell has the physical ability to remain the Redskins’ quarterback for years to come, and he knows in order to do so he has to step up his aggression this season. Expect Campbell to show up to work these next 17 weeks. Now this is an overall tight division, and the Redskins at 17-1 to win the NFC title are not as far behind the 6-1 Giants, 7-1 Eagles, or Cowboys as one might think. The world will be watching the NFC East closely as each of the four teams has undergone some notable changes from last season.

The Eagles match up against the Panthers in Week one will be a chance for Coach Andy Reid to prove once again that the Philadelphia Eagles are strong and cohesive despite their 1-3 preseason record. The Eagles’ coaching staff has much to analyze early on in this season. The defense especially has been impacted by the death of defensive coordinator Jim Johnson. It’ll be interesting to see how current defensive coordinator Sean McDermott handles his defense without former all-pro defensive back Brian Dawkins. McDermott, who has been with the Eagles for a decade, looks to maintain a sharp and speedy secondary. A newly solidified Eagles defense along with a positive, forward-looking Donovan McNabb leads to another exciting season for the Philadelphia Eagles.

How long can the Cowboys maintain an illusion of greatness? Their new stadium helps maintain that facade, yet behind the fuss about their 40 million dollar scoreboard is a question based on fundamental football. How will the Cowboys’ new number one receiver, Roy Williams handle the pressure? He looked great in practice this week, and in recent interviews he appeared to be calm and collected. Still, he has a lot of work to do on the field to get Cowboy fans to forget about Terrell Owens.

The New York Giants should live up to their regular season win odds at 10 games. The Giants’ defense will be even tougher to crack in ‘09. The question that will be answered in the next few weeks is who will emerge as their number one receiver. Though the Giants have some solid competition, they win 10 games this season and journey to Miami for Super Bowl XLIV. I’d like to quote Plaxico Burress here and ask, "What are the odds on that happening?" The answer is pretty close to +120 and 6-1 respectively.
