When Gambling911.com's Tony George predicted his Nebraska Huskers would perform poorly this season, he took it on the chin. But reality set in Monday as the Nebraska Huskers fired Athletic Director Steve Pederson. The news comes only two days after an embarrassing 45-14 loss to Oklahoma State. The team has also fallen during two consecutive weeks.
Pederson, who had held the position since January 2003 and signed a five-year contract in July, was asked to step down by Chancellor Harvey Perlman, the school said in a news release.
``We are of course disappointed about the progress in our football program,' Perlman said. ``Steve has done many positive things for Husker athletics during his tenure, but I think only new leadership can objectively assess the state of our program and make the decisions necessary to move us forward."
The Huskers are far from the only disappointing team this season. In fact, the latest BCS standings released yesterday have some of the early underdogs ranked among the top.
Ohio State (7-0) vaulted to the top of national title picture, with a .9416 BCS average, thanks to losses by previous unbeatens USC and LSU in the past two weeks. South Florida (6-0), which has scored early season upsets over Auburn and West Virginia, earned an average of .9200 to take the second slot.
The rest of the BCS top 10 is filled with surprising schools, including Boston College (7-0) third and originally listed with huge 200-1 odds to win the 2008 BCS Championship, South Carolina (6-1) sixth and originally listed with early 75 to 1 odds of winning the Championship, Kentucky (6-1) seventh and a 100-1 "field option", and Arizona State (7-0), which sits eighth and was initially listed with 50 to 1 odds to win the Championship.
Added Quote from Tony George: "If ex-coach Tom Osborne steps in at AD, which is a possibility since he was defeated for a run for Governor in 2006, he may take this position I have been told from inside sources in the program. Either way Bill Callahan is on a short leash, and Ozzy will cut his ass quickly if he takes the position! They just gave Callahan a $600,000 raise to $1.7 million a year in the 2nd week of this season! Osborne has never been a big fan of the ex-Raider coach. If he does stay, most of his staff will go with Kevin Cosgrove, DC, first on the chopping block.."
