While trying to catch my breath in College Football with one of the wildest years on record with top teams falling down all over the place, it should be noted it has been 3 weeks between reports. Or perhaps it is my utter shock at how my beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers have fallen from grace, and how my prediction of Missouri taking the Big 12 North has come to fruition, with a small glitch, called a game at sold out Arrowhead stadium in a few weeks against 7-0 Kansas! Who would have ever thought the Jayhawks could do more than play hoops? Predicting Oklahoma to finish 3rd in the South is proving to be an issue that looks to be wrong with my sleeper team Texas AM falling on hard times and a coach on the hot seat. I admit I was wrong on that one. Lets break down the Huskers issues, and get my weekly take on a highlighted game.
Team in trouble:
NEBRASKA- Does Turner Gill, ex-Husker QB great and head guy at Buffalo want to return to his roots? Does Bo Pellini from LSU and former NU defensive coordinator and head coach for 1 game in the 2003 Alamo Bowl win dare to return to Nebraska after a rapid departure and snub by then AD Steve Petersen, who was canned 2 weeks ago? Those are the burring questions in Lincoln, NE as legendary coach Tom Osborne has assumed the AD duties to talk the Husker nation off of the ledge so to speak. Bill Callahan's days are VERY numbered after 3 butt kicking's in a row, 2 of them in Lincoln where fans drained out of the stadium faster than a hot knife on butter by halftime. Changes are in store for NU, trust me, but can they make a bowl game? It will not be easy for this Husker team to win 2 more games. They Play Texas in Austin this week, and a 4th butt kicking is in store on the road, where last time they has a roadie, Mizzou lit them up for 41 points and NU failed to score a TD in that debacle. Oh my how the mighty have fallen folks!
Things will not happen overnight in terms of instant success. Ozzy does not have a magic wand, he does not coach the team, and Callahan does not like him. Bottom line is that there will be changes and success will come in small increments before it does in large doses. The Big 12 has caught up to Nebraska, there is no doubt. Teams like Kansas, Kansas State, Colorado and Missouri right now are all better than Nebraska and surely playing with more chemistry and confidence. That is not even considering the South division. It will take 4 years to turn it around and Bill Callahan has done a fine job of running this program into the ground, alienating fans and boosters, and his attitude sucks toward the media and fans.
When they honored the 1997 National Championship team before the Okalahoma State game 2 weeks ago with Ozzy's coaching staff on the field prior to the game at the 50 yard line when the team ran out, not 1 coaching staff member including turd head Bill Callahan stopped and shook their hands. Only Nebraska's basketball coach, Doc Sadler who is new to NU, stopped by to shake their hands, in awe of the past success's and tradition at Nebraska to pay his repsects. No acknowledgement of the storied Husker past, which runs deep in Husker nation, by the current idiots running this circus act called a football team in Lincoln.. That in a nutshell is the problem. The tradition of Nebraska steped in success and class has taken a serious blow on a national level, which Husker fans live and die by, raise their children by, and go to bed at night by. A proud Husker nation is in mourning and disbelief, and it has carried over onto the players, which is sad, but true. Their focus and performance reflects this fact, it cannot be denied in terms of effort and wins and losses.
Continued arrogance about his failures to the media and no signature wins in 4 years has been a serious blow to the creditability and the state of Nebraska. The football team is everything to the fans and residents of that state, there is no denying the fact for those who know Husker football. When Texas decides to open up a can of whip ass on Nebraska on national TV this week, they may need to hire the Lincoln High School coach and his staff to finish out the season.
Can the Huskers suffer the same fate as once proud Notre Dame? It is almost scary how they parallel each other in recent times. Hire an ex-NFL coach who is tabbed as awesome, get an extension without winning during your tenure, and then proceed to lose to every ranked team they play, have no signature wins, and missing bowl games, which NU did in Callahans first year? Looks to be the case folks. Count Nebraska out this season, the coaches and poor players have tossed it in! I would be shocked to see them win 2 more games right now. Colorado on the road tro end the season, Texas this weekend, Kansas on the road, K-State in Lincoln is no easy task for even good teams right now. December cannot get here quick enough and lets hope Tom Osborne decided to hit the recruiting trail, as well as find a new coach!
Texas AM +2 vs. Kansas- What a job Mark Mangino has done at Kansas. Excellent offense (45 ppg) and excellent defense (1`0 ppg allowed) has proven even me wrong in my preseason rankings when it comes to KU. Being one of the top 15 teams in the nation and 7-0 on the year is not what I or anyone else suspected to be honest. A BIG win at Colorado last week, where Oklahoma failed to walk out with a win over an improved Buff team, was impressive. Texas AM did win at Nebraska to keep the natives from calling for Francione's head one more week, but KU can stop the run, are very big and physical up front and are hitting on all cylinders on offense. KU 38 Texas AM 24.
