There were some REAL shockers in the Big 12 last week, some good, some bad, some downright ugly. As a Husker fan, it was a long weekend to say the least, as USC came to Lincoln and beat the living tar out of the once mighty Huskers. You might think with ESPN Gameday in town, both radio and TV, that might inspire the Huskers to tackle, execute, and prove to the nation they are returning to glory and are a major contender in the Big 12 overall, but they laid the proverbial golden goose egg for all of America to see. I picked Nebraska to finish #2 in the Big 12 North, and I stick by it, Missouri is the class of the North, Nebraska is an also ran. Just pathetic what happened in Lincoln Nebraska. Lets get to the rest of the Big 12 with some highlighted teams and bold predictions for this weeks action.
Oklahoma State vs. Texas Tech -6
What the hell happened in Troy Alabama? The same thing that happened 2 years ago with Missouri and Brad Smith, a beat down by the Trojans of a Big 12 team. OSU was DOMINATED and rendered useless on offense in that game on national TV. Be sure to contact the AD at Oklahoma State and not to schedule any more non-BCS schools on the road in pre-conference action again! They play Texas Tech in a conference game, getting 6 at home, they'll never cover. Tech scoring 56 ppg and allowing 21 ppg right now. OSU cannot find chemistry on offense, that was suppose to be their strong suit this year! Texas Tech will outscore them by 10+ in this one!
Iowa State
Oops! Dropped my pants on this one last week. Took Iowa against the Cyclones and guess what? They not only covered the 17 points after getting waxed by Kent State and Northern Iowa at home, but won outright in a shocker of the day for me. I hate the Hawkeye's anyway and am a Big 12 guy, but this came out of left field. I love to go against a team off an upset dog win of this size the following week. ISU takes on Toledo on the road, where Toledo has given up 149 points in 3 games and lost all 3. I'd have to side with ISU laying 4.5 on the road simply because Toledo is horrible.
Texas
George O'Leary is doing good things at Central Florida (Notre Dame should have kept him!) and it showed last week against Texas. The Longhorns are overrated folks. They have struggled against Arkansas State, TCU and Central Florida so far. The Knights should have won the game, but Texas found a way with turnovers and penalties late in the 4th quarter to pull away. Not sure I would lay 39 points against Rice with this crew just yet. Oklahoma looms large on October 6th for Texas I assure you of that. After 2 beatings in the Red River War, I expect Bob Stoops and the surging Sooners to be licking their chops at the way Texas is playing right now. Mac Brown will have a huge blunder again this year, just trying to figure out who it may be. The Longhorns are not all on the same page right now!
The Rest of the story
Missouri continues to impress and get ready for the Huskers in Columbia on October 6th with a big home win last week, and they take on whipping child Illinois State this week. The is a non-lined game. The offense for Mizzou is clicking folks and getting better all the time. Big 12 north champion in the making for Tiger fans. The defense is playing better as well, which was a concern, but other thasn Illinois, they have played well as a unit. A big road win at Ol Miss was impressive in blowout fashion I might add. Look out for the Tigers, they are not de-clawed yet! Can the Huskers do it? After last week, I would say no and RB Tony Temple will have a big day running it against them.
Kansas is rolling! Yep, you heard it, although they have played no one and have Florida International this week. They are #3 in defensive yards allowed in the Nation and #7 in total yards on offense and #4 in scoring in the nation at 53 ppg! We'll see next week when they travel to Kansas State, as the Wildcats are playing with revenge against them from last years whipping in Lawrence. Kansas is well coached, has some talent, and are wanting a bowl bid this year, and with 4 more wins this season, will get it for Mark Magino and Jayhawk backers.
Texas AM brings the nations #5 rushing attack to Miami on Thursday night. Who have they played besides Fresno State, a game they had to win in OT! Are they good enough for a quality road win yet? They were 5-0 on the road last year, but can they win a big one on national TV? I have the winning answer for a Thursday Night Game this week, be sure to check it out.
I'll get to the rest of the teams in next weeks report. Rest assured Oklahoma is really impressing me with a frosh QB right now and look to be the odds on favorite RIGHT NOW they way they executing and playing. Remember I picked them 3rd behind Texas and Texas AM, is there still time to change my mind? Tune in again next week folks!
