Three Things We Learned On Saturday

1. Michigan could still win the Big 10.
After watching an inspired performance by the Wolverine defense, maybe, just maybe, Michigan will still win the Big 10. Obviously, it was the spread offense with a duel-threat quarterback that gave UM problems. But looking down their schedule at the toughest remaining games; at Michigan St, at Wisconsin and verse Ohio St; all three of those teams run basically the same offense that Penn St does, which could spell trouble for the rest of the conference.

2. Offense wins games; Defense wins championships.
Most of you have heard this phrase before, but normally apply it to the NFL or the NBA. However, this is the first time I’m going to apply it to college football as Louisville lost SU as a 37 point favorite giving up 38 points to Syracuse who hasn’t scored that many points in a single game since McNabb suited up. And Nebraska, who gave up 610 yards and 40 points to a MAC school, but somehow still managed to win. Fellas, listen. That type of sloppy play isn’t going to fly during conference play. West Virginia might hang 70 on the Cardinals later this year, while Nebraska might surrender 50 to every team in the Big 12 South.

3. After the Top 6, there is a huge drop-off in the rankings.
USC dominated, LSU cruised, Florida toyed, Oklahoma crushed, WVU embarrassed and Cal destroyed. After that, it’s anyone’s guess. Texas has looked less than impressive, as has Wisconsin and Ohio St. Penn St, South Carolina and Alabama lost, while Rutgers, Clemson and Virginia Tech haven’t really beaten anyone. The two best teams after Cal right now might be Oregon, who has shellacked each opponent by at least 21 points and Boston College who is 3-0 in the ACC after taking care of WF, NC State and Georgia Tech. Regardless, this is the first time in long time there’s such a big gap talent wise between teams ranked in the top 15.
